Monday” resolution!

Killing worked closely with council members to develop this initiative, and we applaud them for encouraging residents to choose meat-free foods at least once a week as a way to help protect their health, the environment, and animals.
Reaching out to corporations and encouraging them to change the way they do business is a cornerstone of Compassion Over Killing’s efforts because every success has a meaningful and positive impact for farmed animals. Encouraging major restaurant retailers and food companies—including some of the largest franchises in the world—to offer vegan options helps to further mainstream the idea of not eating animals by making vegan foods more familiar and available to the masses. COK’s Corporate Campaigns are making it easier for people to choose compassionate, healthful, and environmentally-responsible food choices everyday—and that’s good news for animals.
After successfully persuading companies including Morningstar Farms, Lightlife, BOCA Foods, and Quorn to reduce or eliminate their use of eggs and offer more vegan options, COK has been reaching out to Subway, urging the world’s largest restaurant chain to offer more substantial protein-packed vegan meals on its menus.
Late
last year, we announced that after working with Compassion Over Killing, Quorn
Foods, one of the top-selling frozen vegetarian brands, created its first-ever all-vegan product that was
launched in the US. The Quorn Vegan Burger debuted to rave reviews
and strong sales, and it’s currently available in over 1,000 stores
nationwide.
Inspired by the tremendous success of the US vegan burger and in
response to increasing customer demand in the UK, where the company is based, Quorn is actively working to expand its vegan
line.

Today, Compassion Over Killing, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Farm Sanctuary, and Animal Protection & Rescue League, and several concerned individuals joined forces to file a lawsuit against the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for allowing the sale of a diseased poultry product commonly known as foie
gras.
In January 2012, the European Union’s ban on the use of barren wire
battery cages for egg-laying hens took effect – and the impact seems to
ruffling the feathers of many retailers concerned about the rising cost of eggs. In fact, egg
prices have quadrupled in some markets in EU due to a shortage in supply.

Earlier today, the National Pork Producer’s Council (NPPC) hosted an “educational” briefing on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC titled “Farm Animal Welfare: How We Really Treat Our Animals.” Only thing is, the NPPC’s presentation — just like the factory farms that dominate the pork industry — was hidden behind closed doors.

And COK sprang into action by hosting feed-ins during the busy lunchtime rush hour in Washington, DC and Los Angeles encouraging Subway, the world’s largest restaurant chain, to add more vegan options.
