Flexitarians Want Vegan Options Too

Earlier this year, Chipotle added vegan sofritas to its menus in California, and it’s so popular it already accounts for 5 percent of sales. The company says about one-third of Sofrita eaters are not vegan but rather consumers trying to eat less meat. This shift towards more plant-based foods is further reflected in a recent survey showing that one-third of Americans are buying veggie meats, the majority of whom are not vegan or vegetarian.

Last Thursday, the Montgomery County Council issued a “Meatless Monday” Proclamation officially endorsing a nationwide effort to promote kinder, climate-friendlier, and healthier foods. Compassion Over Killing worked with the Council on this initiative and applauds the County for taking this important step in promoting the many benefits of choosing more plant-based foods.

It’s been one year since Subway stores successfully tested a new vegan menu in the DC-metro area: customers quickly devoured and raved about the Sweet Riblet, Malibu Greek, and Italian Black Bean. While we’re still waiting to see the vegan options permanently added to Subway’s menus nationwide, several other fast casual restaurants are moving on this issue, recognizing the marketing opportunities arising from the increasing consumer demand for healthy, sustainable, and animal-friendly foods.

Rehoboth Beach VegFestOn Sat., June 1, 2013 over 600 people joined us at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, DE to celebrate vegetarian foods during the first-ever Rehoboth Beach VegFest. Festival-goers spent the day indulging in vegan food, listening to speakers, browsing the vendor shops, and enjoying the gorgeous weather.

Even before the festival opened, dozens of eager attendees walked around to visit the over 35 exhibitor booths. Within the first half an hour of the festival opening, volunteers had distributed all 300 of our free goodie bags, filled with free products, coupons, and other items from our sponsors to excited attendees.

Vancouver, Canada is on track to become the first Canadian city to endorse Meatless Mondays! According to the Vancouver Food Policy Council, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is expected to sign a proclamation officially declaring June 10, 2013 as Meatless Monday. Organizers say the day will be celebrated with community events that will spread awareness about–and celebrate–the benefits of meat-free eating.
