While factory farmers, food manufacturers, and retailers play the blame game in Europe over the discovery of horse DNA in various beef products, a significant number of British consumers are responding by not just avoiding the possibly tainted beef, but eating less meat overall.
Chipotle Launches Vegan Sofritas Burrito in San Francisco Bay Area
Starting February 12, seven select San Francisco-area Chipotle restaurants will be dishing out new vegan Sofritas for burritos, tacos, bowls, and salads.
What exactly is Sofritas? It’s shredded tofu (non-GMO from Hodo Soy Beanery) braised with chipotle chiles, roasted poblano peppers, and spices made from tofu. While it was developed specifically to cater the growing number of vegetarian and vegan diners, the company believes it will have a broader appeal to all customers.
Los Angeles Celebrates Its First Official Meatless Monday
Forget Friday—Meatless Monday is our favorite day of the week. Especially now that the entire City of Angels is celebrating its FIRST Meatless Monday, after the Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a “Meatless
Monday” resolution!
Compassion Over
Killing worked closely with council members to develop this initiative, and we applaud them for encouraging residents to choose meat-free foods at least once a week as a way to help protect their health, the environment, and animals.
Think Smoking is Unhealthy? Eating Eggs Might Be Worse
In a new video, posted on one of our favorite websites, NutritionFacts.org, Dr. Michael Greger discusses the details of a competing risk analysis from a Harvard Nurse’s Health Study on women’s health.
Among other important topics, the review compares the dangers of smoking to the dangers of eating animal products. The results?
According to the study, the number one single cause
of death was heart disease, and dietary cholesterol consumption was a
significant risk factor for death. The second leading cause of death was from smoking-related cancer.
Rave Reviews for Subway’s Vegan Subs
Reaching out to corporations and encouraging them to change the way they do business is a cornerstone of Compassion Over Killing’s efforts because every success has a meaningful and positive impact for farmed animals. Encouraging major restaurant retailers and food companies—including some of the largest franchises in the world—to offer vegan options helps to further mainstream the idea of not eating animals by making vegan foods more familiar and available to the masses. COK’s Corporate Campaigns are making it easier for people to choose compassionate, healthful, and environmentally-responsible food choices everyday—and that’s good news for animals.

Inspired by the tremendous success of the US vegan burger and in
response to increasing customer demand in the UK, where the company is based, Quorn is actively working to expand its vegan

According to Chris Wragg, Quorn Foods UK Marketing Director:
Ask Dunkin’ to Have a Heart for Animals
Dunkin’ Donuts is the world’s largest coffee and baked goods chain
serving more than three million customers daily. It offers over 65 varieties of doughnuts — including two heart-shaped specials for Valentine’s Day: Cupid’s Choice and a Chocolate Heart.
Sounds like a sweet deal, until you discover that these heart-shaped specials along every other doughnut dished out by Dunkin’ are made with egg and dairy products from
factory-farmed animals.
