Meatless Monday menu is highlight of World Health Summit
Awareness of the dire health risks presented by a diet laden with animal products is ever-growing, and so too is awareness of the many health benefits of a plant-based diet.
Research shows that processed meats can cause cancer and that a meat-heavy diet is as bad as smoking.
On the flip side, from preventing heart disease, which tops the CDC’s list as the number one killer of Americans, to reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s, and maybe boosting happiness along the way, a vegan diet can work wonders for our health and well-being.
And fittingly, this year’s World Health Summit (WHS) will be powered by plants — featuring a meat-free Meatless Monday menu.
The WHS, to be held Oct. 9-11 in Berlin, Germany this year, has endorsed the Meatless Monday campaign, calling it a “growing global movement” that’s “creating a positive impact on health and the environment.” Meatless Monday encourages people to choose vegetarian and vegan foods at least one day a week as a simple and enjoyable way to protect their health, animals and the planet.
“Meatless Monday is an important public health campaign that has been advised by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future since 2003. The campaign’s encouragement of going meat-free one day per week is a practical and simple step toward improving individual and public health globally,” said Michael J. Klag, the 2012 WHS President and Dean of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Even prestigious cooking school The Culinary Institute of America is telling chefs that plant-based foods, healthier and more sustainable, are the future of protein. Vegan eating is in the spotlight more than ever before.
