It’s Earth Week – and almost Earth Day (April 22)! Study after study confirms that animal agriculture is a leading cause of environmental degradation.
Nine billion farmed animals are killed for us to eat each year — in the US alone, most suffering in confinement and filthy conditions on factory farms. This mass-scale animal farming is not only devastating to the planet, but it causes immense animal suffering, too.
And from the oceans, which are rapidly being depleted of bio-diversity, 2.7 trillion fish are caught globally (and catches are often under-reported).
But put on your superhero cape, because YOU can help save the planet one week, one day, one meal at a time! It might sound impossible, but you take a bite out of climate change, deforestation, pollution, ocean dead zones, and other environmental devastation every time you choose a delicious plant-based meal.
Earth Week = VegWeek!
Thousands of people are doing just that right now by taking part in Compassion Over Killing’s (COK) ninth annual VegWeek campaign. Did you enjoy Meatless Monday? Keep eating green all week: The VegWeek food and fun kicked off yesterday, but you can still take the VegPledge, joining celebrities like Moby, Emily Deschanel, Mya, and Alicia Silverstone.
As COK’s Erica Meier recently told Washington Life, “The single most important action each of us can take to protect our health, the planet and animals is simply to choose plant-based foods.”
March for the Planet!
COK isn’t dropping the ball on protecting the planet when VegWeek is over! We’re going to keep on marching, literally! At the People’s Climate March on Saturday, April 29 in Washington, DC, we will join a large group of organizations and individuals marching under one banner as the Plant-Powered Planet Protectors (or P4).
Hundreds of thousands of people will converge at the March at a critical time for our climate and our future. That day, we invite you to join P4, a diverse coalition with a powerful message: We can choose to protect the planet and our future every time we sit down to eat. March with us – RSVP & invite your planet-protecting pals here!
Can’t join us in DC? You can power your planet protecting with plants from wherever you are! Visit TryVeg.com for recipes, tips, and much more.
