Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending and participating in Paris Vegan Day, an international celebration of plant-based eating in France! Now in its fourth year, I was thrilled to be asked to present cooking demonstrations at this ever-growing festival.
This past Saturday, more than 10,000 people — including civil rights leader and US Congressman John Lewis — gathered at the beautiful waterfront Yards Park for the 2013 DC VegFest to celebrate vegan eating, enjoy engaging speakers and cooking demos, browse over 100 exhibitors or vendor shops, and of course, eat!
This week, environmental activists from around the world will join former Vice President Al Gore in Chicago for training through the Climate Reality Project. It’s a three-day summit focusing on public speaking, community organizing, and the latest climate science, with the expectation that in the next year, they’ll each host their own climate-related events and submit articles to newspapers about this important issue.
Earlier this week, hundreds of people—including animal advocates, non-profit organizations (such as Compassion Over Killing), veterinarians, vet students, and countless other caring individuals attended a public hearing in Boston, Massachusetts to show their support for a bill aiming to protect farmed animals in the state.
There’s a trend that seems to be reverberating through sectors of animal agribusiness: declining sales. We recently wrote about how Americans are drinking less and less milk with each new generation. And remember the Mark Bittman piece examining how beef, chicken and pork consumption has been plummeting in the past several years? And per capita egg consumption in the US has also been steadily declining for the past six years. This is all good news for animals – and it opens up opportunities for us to introduce more people to the vegan versions of some our favorite foods, such as hot dogs.
We’re excited to announce that this past weekend at the 2013 Animal Rights National Conference, Compassion Over Killing’s Executive Director Erica Meier was honored with prestigious Animal Rights Hall of Fame award.
This annual award recognizes leaders in our movement who have spearheaded major advancements for animals in the US. Previous recipients include Peter Singer, Bruce Friedrich, Paul Shapiro, Ingrid Newkirk, and many more.
On Sat., June 1, 2013 over 600 people joined us at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, DE to celebrate vegetarian foods during the first-ever Rehoboth Beach VegFest. Festival-goers spent the day indulging in vegan food, listening to speakers, browsing the vendor shops, and enjoying the gorgeous weather.
Even before the festival opened, dozens of eager attendees walked around to visit the over 35 exhibitor booths. Within the first half an hour of the festival opening, volunteers had distributed all 300 of our free goodie bags, filled with free products, coupons, and other items from our sponsors to excited attendees.
