Subway Vegan Options Expand into UK

Subway, the household name when it comes to quick custom sandwiches, is yet again dipping into the plant-based market by offering a fully vegan veggie patty in some of its UK stores. This comes after more than 18,000 people have contacted the sandwich giant asking for vegan options through Compassion Over Killing’s website.

The patty, LiveKindly reports, is similar to the US vegetarian version and seems to be made up of the same ingredients, including textured vegetable protein, mushrooms, water chestnuts, and other vegetables. But, lucky for the UK, this version does not include any egg or milk ingredients!

In 2015, Compassion Over Killing’s campaign prompted Subway to trial three vegan options in DC, Virginia, and Maryland, which were later rolled out into over 1,000 stores in the United States. However, while the US options are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, the rest of the world is ramping up its plant-based game. In the past year, Subway Australia and New Zealand have debuted their own plant-based options with the addition of a falafel sandwich to their menu. In Finland, the company even released a vegan steak sandwich.

Subway vegan options are still expanding–but US stores are falling behind. Even Subway Canada carries a fully-vegan veggie patty in nearly all locations.

Join us in showing Subway that there’s plenty of demand for plant-based sandwiches here in the US. To encourage Subway to bring more vegan options stateside, visit welovesubway.com.
