Forbes recently ranked 9 things each of us can do to fight climate change. Standing strong at #1: “Become a vegetarian, or better yet a vegan!”
And the article even states that if you give up meat and dairy just one day each week “it will still be the most important action you can take,” since animal agriculture’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions could be as high as 51% percent (even the more conservative estimate of 18% is more than the entire transportation sector).
This pretty powerful planetary call to action is far from the first. A study by Oxford University found that a widespread switch to a vegan diet by the year 2050 would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent, while also saving 8 million human lives and cutting healthcare costs by $1 trillion. Some scientists have said a tax on meat is needed to take a bite out of global warming.
The United Nation puts it this way: “A substantial reduction of impacts [from agriculture] would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.”
In the face of climate change denial, scientists are increasingly concerned — even moving Earth’s “Doomsday Clock” closer to midnight than it’s been since 1953, citing climate change among other concerns.
But the good news is that it’s easier than ever to fight environmental doom with your fork. Meat-free meats will be in the top global food trends this year. Plant-based options are taking root in mainstream stores and restaurants around the planet.
So while it’s vital for us to keep standing up for the planet and speaking out about the dangers of climate change, we can also have a real impact every time we sit down to eat. Visit TryVeg.com today for green recipes kinder to the planet, to animals, and to you!
