Thanksgiving is nearly here, and sadly, nearly 46 million turkeys will be killed for this holiday alone.
The good news this November is that it’s easier than ever to opt for kind, compassionate alternatives that are just as delicious and will impress every eater celebrating at your Thanksgiving table.
Here are some of our favorite vegan recipes for a Thanksgiving feast that gives turkeys something to be thankful for:
Cruelty-Free Turkey
There are SO many options for your turkey alternative. If you prefer to buy something pre-made, Field Roast offers a whole line of roasts, including the Celebration Roast with traditional bread stuffing and porcini mushroom gravy, the Smokey Forager’s Roast with pineapple mustard glaze, and the Hazelnut Cranberry Roast en Croute. From Tofurky, there’s the Holiday Roast and Gravy — as well as the brand new (and totally delicious) Ham Roast. Gardein makes a Savory Stuffed Turk’y and a Holiday Roast. At Trader Joe’s, you can pick up the Turkeyless Stuffed Roast.
If you want to make something yourself, you can try iconic chef Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s mouthwatering seitan roast with shitakes and leeks. Or, opt for The Gentle Chef’s Roast Mock Lamb with English Mint Sauce. The Edgy Veg promises that hers is The Best Ever Vegan Holiday Roast; considering that it’s stuffed with sweet potato mash, vegan stuffing and cranberry sauce — it very well might be.
Stuffing
Who doesn’t love the bready, carby goodness of stuffing? Try ours. Minimalist Baker’s simple vegan recipe uses basic ingredients: veggies, bread, butter, and other flavorful stuff. Together, they’re the perfect combo. You could also opt for Serious Eats’ version, which is all about the fresh sage and yummy leeks.
Green Bean Casserole
This iconic dish is a Thanksgiving must. Brand New Vegan’s recipe is legit. It includes mushrooms, garlic, onions, and — of course — green beans and fried onions. Yum. Oh My Veggies’ option has you frying up those onions yourself.
Mashed Potatoes
Buttery, creamy mashed potatoes are one of the most amazing parts of a Thanksgiving meal, and it’s incredibly easy to recreate those flavors without animal ingredients. Try the Food Network’s vegan roasted-garlic mashed potatoes recipe, or My California Roots’ creamiest vegan mashed potatoes.
Dinner Rolls
You’ve gotta have bread to soak up all the goodies left lying on your plate. Loving It Vegan has an easy dinner rolls recipe that only requires six ingredients, and Genius Kitchen’s vegan sweet yeast rolls are simple, soft and sweet.
Sweet Potato Casserole
The other must on the casserole list is the sweet potato casserole. It’s dessert for dinner, and it’s perfection. Oh She Glows’ recipe is all about the maple, cinnamon and nut crumble topping. If you want to add marshmallows, too, try Dandies’ recipe using their super-delicious vegan treats.
Cranberry Sauce
Granted, most cranberry sauce is accidentally vegan — but you never know, so we’ve got some definitely vegan options. Try this crazy-amazing cranberry sauce from The Blender Girl, or I Love Vegan’s super-easy option.
