Starbucks launches vegan food option nationwide

After a years-long campaign by Animal Outlook (and a few false hopes along the way), Starbucks is finally offering a vegan menu option. Join us in celebrating this victory and thanking the coffee giant with a quick tweet.

Animal Outlook and Jane Velez-Mitchell launched a petition asking Starbucks to add vegan menu items more than six years ago. During this time, Starbucks launched two new non-dairy milks and conscious consumers got their hopes up with a vegan cookie launch, only to learn that it was discontinued shortly after. During its shareholder meeting in 2018, Starbucks told Animal Outlook that more vegan food options were on the way. As time passed, no announcements were made — but we did not quit.

Thanks to hundreds of thousands of supporters like you, Starbucks received countless emails, tweets, phone calls, Facebook and Instagram comments, and messages, letting the coffee giant know that plant-based eating is here to stay and that we would love to see a fully vegan food option on its menus. And your support for our campaign only increased in momentum after we heard the disappointing news that the Impossible Breakfast Sausage Sandwich could not be made vegan as it is prepackaged with dairy-based cheese and egg.

As excitement once again stirred around the news that Starbucks was testing a fully vegan breakfast sandwich, we also learned that the company dedicated an entire Seattle location to testing vegan food options. Now, only a few months later, as Starbucks announced the release of its highly anticipated Oatly partnership to offer oat milk nationwide, we’re thrilled to share the news that it has also launched a vegan Chickpea Bites & Avocado Protein Box, which will be available at most locations nationwide beginning March 2, 2021.

Watch: Rachel Pawelski, Animal Outlook’s manager of corporate engagement, shares her reaction to the new protein box.

This campaign has faced its fair share of ups and downs but we have high hopes that this is only the beginning of Starbucks’ new plant-based momentum. And as we anticipate future announcements of fully vegan menu options, we will happily munch on our Chickpea Bites and Avocado Protein Boxes in the meantime.

Thanks to generous supporters, Animal Outlook’s corporate engagement team works every day to put vegan options on menus around the world. Help make lasting change for animals by supporting our campaigns and giving today at animaloutlook.org/donate.

  1. I think this is wonderful that Starbucks and McDonald’s is going towards plant based foods.
Not only is this healthier for people, but the animals who suffer so much from slaughter will be
saved by this, and in the future when all companies catch on; maybe more animals will be saved.

  2. THANK YOU!!!!!!!I am a plant based consumer thanks for allowing me to eat something at Starbucks I look forward to more choices as we stop exploiting animals and stop adding to climate change
