After hearing from the more than 20,000 consumers who have spoken up against Nestlé’s dairy cruelty since our shocking investigation, the food giant is now launching vegan cheddar cheese and bacon to pair with its Awesome Burger for the ultimate vegan meal: a bacon cheeseburger!
As Nestlé scrambles to keep up with the sizzling demand for vegan products, it recently launched the vegan “bleeding” Awesome Burger and then announced that vegan chicken, sausage, and bacon were also on the way. The brand confirmed to Compassion Over Killing that this decision was made in large part due to hearing the sizzling plant-based demand from its customers through COK’s campaign.
But today’s news of vegan cheese to pair with these alternative meats marks the brand’s first step in addressing the curdling demand for cow’s milk since the release of our investigation. The company will be selling the bacon, cheese, and burger trio to restaurant and foodservice customers to provide an entirely vegan meal–a landmark step at a time when many fast food chains are still pairing Beyond and Impossible burgers with animal-derived cheese or mayo.
In a statement, Nestlé writes: “We have now raised the bar by developing a ‘PB triple play’ of ingredients for an all-time classic: the bacon cheeseburger.”
Despite this landmark progress, our work isn’t over for the more than a million cows languishing in Nestlé’s supply chain every year. Our recent investigation exposed hot irons being burned into calves’ flesh to permanently destroy their horns and growth tissue in a cruel process known as “dehorning” or “disbudding” — and so far Nestlé has failed to address this systemic cruelty.
