Part of Compassion Over Killing’s mission is to make healthy and compassionate vegan food choices more affordable and accessible. That’s why this year, COK has teamed up with the Joyful Food Markets by Martha’s Table, through our TryVeg program to serve up fresh produce and simple, easy-to-make recipes in DC’s ward 7 community.

We’re hoping to expand that mission even further, and this week donated two boxes of Follow Your Heart vegan yogurt to the Martha’s Table Headquarters Market as part of our continued partnership! This completely free food market in Southeast DC (2375 Elvans Road, SE) is open Monday-Friday from 11:00am – 4:00pm. Visitors are invited to shop once every month, and the cold months tend to be their busiest season.

The yogurt, which is not yet available in stores, didn’t last on shelves long–indicating a large need for dairy-free options. Next, we hope to supply shelf-stable, plant-based milks.

This DC Martha’s Table market sees an average of 740 attendees each month. Market Manager, Dillon Babington, shared that there are many families in need of dairy alternatives for health reasons, and due to food allergies. Babington also mentioned that some shoppers were looking for vegan products per their doctor’s recommendation.

We plan to continue ensuring that this community has adequate healthy, vegan alternatives and will do our best to support vegan options in food banks around the city.

Each month, COK’s TryVeg team is also giving out vegan food at Joyful Food Markets at Drew Elementary School, and we’re always accepting volunteers. Read more here.
