Los Angeles Something HealthyIn 2011, we announced that after working with Compassion Over Killing (COK), the Canadian-based quick-service sandwich chain, Pita Pit, added a new vegan black bean patty to its menus in over 100 locations throughout the US. We also successfully worked with the UK-based Quorn, the world’s number one brand of meat-free alternatives, to launch its first-ever, all-vegan product.

Reaching out to international corporations to increase the availability of vegan options in the marketplace is just one of the many ways COK is fulfilling its mission to help mainstream the idea of not eating animals. We’re also thrilled to support small entrepreneurial business ventures in our local communities through our restaurant outreach campaign.

Los Angeles Something HealthyThat’s where the Los-Angeles based Something Healthy comes in. After several months of working with the terrific folks behind this eco- and health-conscious café, they’re now dishing out the COK-inspired “Compassion Club,”—and what’s more is when you order this new vegan sandwich, 10% of the proceeds will be automatically donated to COK!

What is the Compassion Club? It’s a hot sourdough panini loaded with vegan chicken, red onion, tomato, and walnuts. And the bread comes slathered with a creative combination of homemade vegan basil pesto and agave mustard—both of which were specially created for this dish, and which are rare finds in restaurants.

Los Angeles Something HealthyTo tout this new animal-friendly and heart-heallthy option, Something Healthy is now displaying COK’s  “Proud to Serve Vegetarian & Vegan Meals” window decal to attract passersby—look for one in restaurants near you (image below). Something Healthy will also be listed in the 2012 edition of our Vegetarian Guide to Los Angeles, to be released at the end of this month and distributed to 20,000 Los Angelenos—so stay tuned!

Los Angeles Something Healthy“Something Healthy breaks the norm of fast food dining—we have designed a healthy, satisfying menu without sacrificing on taste, and are conveniently open every day of the week from morning to evening,” said Cary Chan, co-owner of the restaurant. “And, with the launch of our extensive vegetarian menu, this is the perfect place to bring vegetarians and non-vegetarians together!”

Join us at Something Healthy for a volunteer meeting and lunch to celebrate the launch of the COK-designed “Compassion Club” on January 29. In addition to enjoying the tasty new sandwich, you’ll also meet other activists and learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities, such as reaching out to restaurants in your area about adding vegan options.

RSVP now, and help us make 2012 the Year of Compassion!
