Last Thursday evening, on June 9, as thousands of Glee fans flocked to Washington, DC’s Verizon Center for the sold-out “Glee Live!” concert, COK interns and volunteers were on hand with trays of free vegan food and stacks of pro-vegetarian literature.
Before the show started, a line of eager and energetic fans started wrapping around the building—and we walked from end to end spreading a message of compassion. Within 60 minutes, more than 350 samples of Field Roast sausage were devoured and about 1,000 pieces of literature, including our popular Vegetarian Starter Guide and Easy Vegan Recipes, were distributed. The crowd was incredibly receptive, and responses to our free vegan samples included: “wow, this is awesome,” “vegan sausages? That’s so cool!,” and “really, so this is totally meat-free?”
Glee star Lea Michele, who plays the lead role of Rachel Berry, is vegan in real life, which prompted many conversations with fans about the benefits of a plant-based diet and where to find animal-friendly foods.
