New Investigation: Slaughterhouse Horrors for Hens

Behind nearly every  “incredible edible” egg sold in grocery stores today is a hen so intensively confined inside a barren wire battery cage, she can barely even move. With just 67 square inches of floor space on which to live – about the size of an iPad – she can’t even flap her wings, let alone nest, perch, dust bathe, or perform many other natural behaviors.

This is how she — and hundreds of millions of smart and social birds like her – are forced to spend their lives. Day in and day out, it’s absolute misery.

But what happens next, when the egg factory decides these birds are “spent,” an industry term for animals are no longer considered profitable enough to keep alive? While most egg-laying hens are gassed or otherwise killed on site, after a lifetime of misery some of these birds are shipped off to slaughterhouses where, tragically, their suffering continues.

Earlier today, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released an undercover video showing, for the first time, the graphic details behind the closed doors of a “spent” hen slaughter plant in Minnesota. The investigation reveals shocking horrors that includes birds being scalded alive and thrown into trash buckets.
