Giant sandwich chain Subway has announced plans to introduce a vegan sandwich option in 100 locations across Australia and New Zealand! This is another big step in Subway becoming more vegan-friendly around the globe. In February of this year, Subways in Finland began offering a soy-based vegan “steak” sandwich. Now, Australians can get their hands on a new smashed falafel sandwich, easily ordered vegan.
In 2012, a campaign by Compassion Over Killing convinced U.S. Subways to trial three vegan sandwiches in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. By 2015, they rolled out the vegan options to 1,000 locations from LA to DC to Florida. Now, as demand for plant-based options continues to grow, Subway is making changes to its menu in Australia and offering the new falafel sub.
“We know Australian palates and preferences have changed over time, and we’re excited to hear directly from our guests so we can end up with a great balance between the classic Subway favourites, and on-trend, innovative flavours,” said Subway marketing director Kate Brody.
According to the Courier Mail, the sandwich comes with a tzatziki sauce–but that can easily be swapped out for a different, vegan condiment!
Subway is clearly paying attention to customer wishes and joining the growing number of restaurants offering a vegan option. With your help, COK has urged companies like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts to offer non-dairy milks, and Starbucks is even beginning to debut new vegan foods. Let’s ask Subway to do the same and start offering ethical options in the U.S.
