Meatless eating not only saves the lives of animals, but it can protect and improve our precious health too! After all, research has found that the leading cause of death in the US — heart disease — is preventable with a plant-based diet.

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition points to a vegetarian diet as the most effective for those losing weight. Researchers found this meatless diet is especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and can even improve metabolism.

The lead author, Dr. Hana Kahleová of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says, “Vegetarian diets proved to be the most effective diets for weight loss. However, we also showed that a vegetarian diet is much more effective at reducing muscle fat, thus improving metabolism.”

Dr. Kahleová added that the finding is not only important for those suffering from obesity-related conditions but “relevant to anyone who takes their weight management seriously and wants to stay lean and healthy.”

Researchers have found that a meat-heavy diet has as strong a link to cancer as tobacco does! Other animal products come with health risks, too: Eating even less than one egg a day has been tied to increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. And as consumers realize that dairy milk is not only packed with cholesterol as well as cruelty, they’re turning to healthier plant-based milks.

But leaving animal products off your plate doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor! It’s easier than ever to find healthier, more compassionate, and delicious plant-based foods, and we’re here to help. Visit TryVeg.com for recipes, product tips, and more!
