New Investigation Reveals Shocking Cruelty to Pigs

Yesterday, Mercy For Animals released a new undercover video revealing horrific cruelty to pigs at a company that supplies meat to Walmart. Secretly recorded by an investigator working inside a pig breeding factory farm in Pipestone, Minnesota, the footage shows workers punching, kicking, and screaming at animals; slamming fully-conscious baby pigs into the ground headfirst; and slicing off tails of piglets without any painkillers.

That’s in addition to the miserable yet standard practice of immobilizing pregnant pigs inside narrow gestation crates that prevent these smart and highly social animals from even being able to turn around or lie down comfortably. Treated as mere piglet-producing machines, they suffer both physically and mentally.

Experts widely agree that confining pigs in gestation crates causes immense suffering. Welfare concerns have already prompted the entire European Union (effective 2013) and eight US states to phase out this barbaric system of confinement.

This Mercy for Animals video offers us a glimpse into the disturbing realities forced upon pigs raised for food:

This isn’t the first time undercover investigators have taken on the painstaking task of wearing an undercover camera to document and expose the ugly realities of animal agribusiness. And, it won’t be the last.

In fact, earlier this month, Compassion Over Killing released a heart-breaking undercover video exposing cruelty to baby birds inside a chicken hatchery in Pennsylvania.  Undercover investigations are pulling back the curtains on the meat, egg, and dairy industries, showing the world what factory farms and slaughter plants are so desperately trying to hide from public view.
