9 Ways to Celebrate World Vegan Day

PigsThere are so many reasons to choose vegan foods—more than nine billion, in fact. Sadly, that’s how many birds, pigs, and cows are killed each year for food in the U.S. (and billions more aquatic animals suffer the same fate).

That’s why, for World Vegan Day (Nov. 1) — and World Vegan Month (Nov.), we’re sharing nine ways to celebrate the compassionate choices we can make to defend these animals who are every bit as smart, social, and sentient as the cats and dogs with whom we share our homes:

fruits and veggiesIt’s Food Day! Organized by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is a nationwide celebration
and movement to improve our country’s food policies as they relate to health and
nutrition, hunger, farm worker justice and animal welfare. Fortunately, we have the power to make a difference in all of these areas right now, simply by leaving animals off our plates. Here’s how:

This past weekend in Dallas, thousands of people gathered together to celebrate – and indulge in delicious vegan food – at the third annual Texas State Veggie Fair, organized by Dallas Vegan!  And COK was thrilled to be part of this year’s festivities.

While the main attraction was the food with over two dozen restaurants, including the famous all-vegan Spiral Diner (pictured here), offering everything from vegan corn dogs to kale salad, the event also featured cooking demos, kids games, live music, speakers, and more.

Gestation Crate

gestationcrate-overview-275x247.jpgIt’s hard to imagine just how miserable life is for a pregnant pig locked inside a narrow gestation crate that is barely wider than her body. Nearly immobilized day after day, month after month – unable to even turn around – these smart and social animals are treated like mere piglet-producing machines. They
suffer both physically and mentally.

More than 70% of the almost six million female pigs raised for breeding
in the US are forced to endure such intensive confinement, and their suffering is kept hidden behind the closed doors of animal agribusiness.

aren’t worth a whole lot these days, but what if someone told you that’s all it might take to actually change
someone’s mind – and save lives. How? Two
pennies is the average cost per view of running a 30-second commercial on
HULU.com
, one of the most popular video streaming websites where a growing
number of people are turning to watch their favorite TV shows. Yes, just
two pennies.

Now imagine if, while watching HULU, in between
their prime time television shows or late night comedy on demand, viewers caught a brief glimpse
of the horrors kept hidden behind the closed doors of animal agribusiness.

DCVF-carrot-210x264.jpgCompassion Over Killing staff and volunteers kicked it into high gear in September, going green at two eco-friendly festivals and organizing the largest DC VegFest in history! Combined, we handed out over 6,000 pieces of literature and reached thousands more with our message of compassion.

On September 8, we tabled at the Green Living Expo at the University of the District of Columbia, and COK’s Sean Conner was one of two panelists during the “Food Choices and the Environment” presentation.
