Last Wednesday, more than a dozen passionate advocates gathered on the steps of the LA County Courthouse to send a clear message: Manning Beef must never again operate as a slaughterhouse.
With the facility heading to auction, we stood together to ensure any prospective buyers understood the depth of community opposition to resuming slaughter operations. Our voices rang out for Liberty and Indigo—the two cows Joaquin Phoenix rescued from this very facility in 2020—and for every animal who suffered there.
The turnout was powerful. As was the media coverage.
We’re grateful to the LA Times, Daily Mail, CBS News, KTLA, and local Pico Rivera news outlets for amplifying our call for compassion and accountability. When communities speak up, the world pays attention.
In the end, the sale was postponed due to ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. But make no mistake—we made our feelings heard, and we’re not going anywhere.
The City of Pico Rivera has committed to ensuring this property never returns to slaughter operations, and Animal Outlook will be there every step of the way to hold that promise.
This is what advocacy looks like. This is what progress sounds like. And this is just the beginning.
Thank you to every single person who showed up, signed the petition, shared the news, and stood for what’s right. Together, we’re turning a site of suffering into a symbol of hope.
