“The reality of food processing can be off-putting… There is always a percentage of dead birds [and] chicken houses that will inherently contain a level of fly and rodent activity.” – Ron Kreider, President of Kreider Farms, responds to new undercover video

As reported last night on ABC World News, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) just released a new undercover video exposing severe overcrowding of hens crammed inside barren wire battery cages, rotting corpses of birds in cages with live hens, and filthy, fly-infested conditions. The video was filmed by an HSUS investigator working inside Kreider Farms, an egg factory farm in Pennsylvania, the nation’s third-largest egg-producing state.

The miserable conditions for hens at this egg factory farm fall far below even the industry’s own voluntary standards — and Kreider Farms is one of the few major egg producers in the US that actively opposes the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendment of 2012 (H.R. 3798), a federal bill that aims to ban barren battery cages nationwide and reduce the suffering of hundreds of millions of egg-laying hens.

This video highlights the urgent need not only for legislative reform on a federal level, but also for more transparency about where our food is coming from allowing consumers to make more informed choices.

In a powerful New York Times article about this investigation, Is an Egg for Breakfast Worth This?, columnist Nicholas Kristof concludes: “Somehow, fried eggs don’t taste so good if you imagine the fetid barn in which they were laid.”

Indeed, the most effective step we can take to protect laying hens is to simply leave eggs out of our shopping carts.
