March 20 is the first day of spring. It’s also the Great American Meatout, making it the perfect opportunity to encourage others to turn over a new leaf by choosing healthier and more humane foods. And COK sprang into action by hosting feed-ins during the busy lunchtime rush hour in Washington, DC and Los Angeles encouraging Subway, the world’s largest restaurant chain, to add more vegan options.
Dishing out samples from two 6-foot Subway vegan subs loaded with fresh veggies and protein-packed Tofurky deli slices, our DC team — Carolyn Wendler, Jessica Blacksten, David Kriesberg, Patricia Welty, Rena Roseman, and Jacob Spendelow — introduced over 300 Washingtonians to delicious vegan food. We also distributed hundreds of pieces of pro-veg literature and talked with countless people about the benefits of choosing animal-friendly foods. Here are some of the reactions:
- “If you hadn’t told me this was vegan turkey, I would never have guessed”
- “This tastes exactly–I mean EXACTLY like the turkey sandwich I always order!”
- “This is delicious! Can I order this at Subway?”
In sunny Los Angeles, volunteers Kelly, Jessica, Tony, Jose, Alexis, and Sarakoschka rocked the sidewalk with two more 6-foot Tofurky vegan subs. We distributed over 500 pieces of literature and nearly 300 bite-sized sandwiches to Westwood locals and UCLA students eager to taste and snap photos with the biggest sandwich they’d ever seen.
The eye-catching 6-foot vegan subs were traffic-stoppers—literally! One girl jumped out of her car during a red-light to grab a sample as soon as she heard us say it was vegan. A bus driver at his stop called us aboard so he could get a sandwich too. Even a fireman on his lunch break rushed over, excited to get a taste.
Check out photos of the fun in Los Angeles and Washington, DC on Facebook. And ask Subway to offer vegan options so that sandwich fans everywhere can celebrate Meatout all year long!
