2nd Hidden Camera Exposé in One Week Uncovers Horrors Endured by Day-Old Baby Birds

Fresno, CA — Today, national animal protection organization Compassion Over Killing (COK) released new undercover footage filmed inside Foster Farms’ turkey hatchery in Fresno, California. This is the second hidden camera revelation in one week. Five days ago, an undercover video by another animal welfare organization exposed extreme cruelty to chickens inside Foster Farms facilities.
Now, new hidden camera video by a COK investigator who worked at Foster Farms also documents abuse – this time to baby turkeys:
- Discarded baby birds being ground up while alive and fully conscious
- Newly-hatched turkeys being mutilated – their toes and beaks burned off without pain relief
- Other unwanted hatchlings tossed in a plastic bag to slowly suffocate to death.
While such violence and cruelty would likely be prosecuted if these abuses were inflicted upon dogs or cats, Foster Farms is in the process of certifying its turkey production practices as “humane” through the so-called “American Humane Association” (AHA). The AHA’s “American Humane Certified” seal of approval already appears on packages of Foster Farms chicken products, which concerned consumers are now calling into question after last week’s undercover exposé blew the lid off this humane claim scam.
“As our video documents, Foster Farms routinely mutilates baby birds and treats them like trash by throwing live hatchlings into grinders or slowly suffocating them in garbage bags,” says COK’s Executive Director Erica Meier. “This violence would not be tolerated if these were dogs or cats, and we shouldn’t tolerate here — it should be labeled as criminal, not ‘humane.’”
Earlier this month, it was announced that Foster Farms will be raising the 2015 National Thanksgiving Turkey who will be presented to President Obama for “pardoning” this fall. COK’s investigator is calling on the President to go beyond the symbolic gesture of “pardoning” one turkey and make the compassionate decision to pardon all turkeys during the holiday season.
