Did you know that raising animals for food causes more environmental degradation — global warming, water & air pollution, resource depletion and biodiversity loss — than any other industry? Moreover, did you know that it’s not just farmed animals who suffer? Animal agriculture impacts wildlife. too.
According to the Center for Biological Diversity, grazing affects 14% of endangered animals and 33% of endangered plants. Growing crops to produce animal feed increases those numbers, while taking up valuable land that could be repurposed to grow more eco-efficient and nutritionally beneficial plants.
And that’s why the Center, which previously launched the campaign “Take Extinction Off Your Plate,” is encouraging everyone to enjoy an “extinction-free BBQ” (#ExtinctionFreeBBQ) for Labor Day!
“This Earth-friendly diet will help save our planet and its incredible biodiversity for present and future generations,” offered vegan actress and author Alicia Silverstone, an endorser of the campaign.
Wondering what to eat if not meat? The Center has compiled delicious recipes from top chefs and food bloggers, and organized them into two categories, “Classic” and “New Favorites.” You can also try our “Chicken Salad,” “BBQ Seitan,” and “Egg-Free Potato Salad,” picnic-friendly foods that celebrate both the outdoors and animals!
