Most people accept that the climate is changing fast. Fewer people know that what is on our plates is a major part of the problem. Factory farming — the intensive, industrial production of meat, dairy, and eggs — is quietly driving deforestation, land degradation, and powerful greenhouse gas emissions.
Animal Outlook’s mission is simple and bold: Exposing Truth. Inspiring Change. To confront the climate crisis honestly, we have to look directly at the role of animal agribusiness.
Factory farming heats the planet
Global food systems are responsible for a large share of human made greenhouse gases, and livestock is one of the biggest contributors within that system. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that livestock accounts for about 14.5 percent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions — more than all direct emissions from the world’s cars, trucks, ships, and planes combined in many analyses.

Factory farming drives emissions in several ways:
- Manure and waste: Huge amounts of animal waste release methane and nitrous oxide, highly powerful climate pollutants far more potent than carbon dioxide over the short term.
- Feed production: Vast areas of land are used to grow feed crops for farmed animals. This often means clearing forests and grasslands, both releasing stored carbon and destroying biodiversity.
- Energy intensive operations: Industrial barns and slaughter facilities depend on fossil fuel based energy for heating, cooling, and processing.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has made it clear that current land use — especially for livestock — is a major driver of land degradation, biodiversity loss, and rising emissions.

Planet under pressure
Factory farming does not only threaten the animals who are confined inside enormous sheds. It reshapes entire landscapes. To feed billions of farmed animals, croplands expand, forests are cleared, and water resources are overused. The IPCC notes that about three quarters of the global ice-free land surface is already affected by human use, with livestock and feed production playing a central role.
This pressure on land has consequences:
- More deforestation and habitat loss.
- Less carbon stored in soils and forests.
- Greater vulnerability to droughts, floods, and heat waves.
Stopping climate change means using land more wisely and shifting away from systems that burn huge amounts of land, water, and energy to produce animal products.
Plant-based choices matter
Climate science is clear — rapid cuts in greenhouse gas emissions are immediately necessary. One of the most powerful tools we have is the power to change our diet. Choosing vegan foods can dramatically reduce land use, emissions, and pollution compared to diets heavy in meat, dairy, and eggs.
This is exactly where Animal Outlook focuses its work: challenging animal agribusiness and empowering people to choose vegan. Through undercover investigations, legal advocacy, corporate and food system reform, and public education, we expose how factory farming harms animals, the planet, and our future — and show that a different reality for food systems is possible.
Supporting real climate solutions
If you are alarmed by the climate impact of factory farming, you can:
- Explore vegan meals and make plant-based foods a personal commitment.
- Share credible information about factory farming with friends and family.
- Follow and support Animal Outlook, amplifying our message and donating to power undercover investigations, strategic lawsuits, and vegan outreach.
Thank you for standing with Animal Outlook. Together, we can confront factory farming and build a food system rooted in justice, sustainability, and compassion.
