Consumer Protection Lawsuit Against Panera Bread

🚨 We just filed our first major lawsuit of 2026 ⚖️✊

On behalf of Plaintiff Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) and alongside our co-counsel Richman Law & Policy, we just filed a consumer protection lawsuit against Panera Bread and its parent company, JAB Holding Company. This case represents exactly the kind of strategic legal action that can create systemic change for animals—and it’s the first glimpse of what our newly established Strategic Litigation Fund will make possible.

Why we took this action.

As the Complaint alleges, Panera built its reputation on specific commitments for nearly a decade: “No Antibiotics Ever” policies, promises about pasture-raised beef, and public pledges about animal welfare standards. But Panera has quietly walked away from those promises while continuing to market itself as a leader in responsible sourcing. Panera is alleged to have loosened its standards for animal welfare and so-called clean ingredients in its food while preparing for a public stock offering, shaving an estimated $21 million off its annual costs.

For example, according to the company’s own disclosures, not a single chicken supplier in its supply chain met its target for reduced stocking density by 2024-2025—a goal Panera originally set for 2021—so chickens are not guaranteed even one square foot of space. Meanwhile, the company scaled back its antibiotic-free commitments for pork and turkey and eliminated pasture-based reporting requirements for cattle—all while continuing to tell consumers it was “working to reduce the routine use of antibiotics and close confinement of animals.”

This lawsuit is about accountability, transparency, and pushing one of the country’s largest restaurant chains to live up to the standards they promised—or stop claiming they do. The complaint therefore demands that Panera stop deceiving consumers and provide transparent information about how animals in their supply chain are actually treated.

And this is just the beginning. Animal Outlook, as both plaintiff and legal counsel, is gearing up for two more major cases this spring, each one carefully selected to create maximum impact for animals through the legal system.

Strategic litigation is one of the most powerful tools we have to create lasting change. When we win these cases, we don’t just help the animals in one facility—we change corporate policies that affect millions of animals across entire supply chains.
