Compassion Over Killing staff, interns, and volunteers celebrated Vegetarian Awareness Month all October long by distributing thousands of pieces of pro-vegetarian literature at the many fall festivals held across the East Coast.
We kicked off the month with a community festival right in our own back yard! The Takoma Park Street Festival is a popular annual event bringing thousands to the streets of funky, diverse Takoma Park, Maryland. Our team handed out Vegetarian Starter Guides, vegan recipes, and bumper stickers encouraging curious locals to “Try Veg.”
Next up was tabling at Baltimore’s BARCStober Fest, where we met many adoptable dogs from the local shelter, BARCS, along with hundreds of animal lovers. What a perfect audience for vegetarian outreach! We sampled out pieces of Gardein BBQ Skewers and talked to attendees about how chickens, pigs, and cows are just as smart, social, and sentient as the cats and dogs with whom they share their homes. This struck a chord with many people, who said they planned to look for Gardein and other meat alternatives during their next trip to the grocery store!
After that we headed to Vegtoberfest, a fun event drawing hundreds of people to Riverside Park in Baltimore, all eager to learn the hows and whys of going veg. COK volunteers spent the beautiful sunny day meeting new activists and handing out our Easy Vegan Recipes booklet.
Finally, our terrific Florida volunteers brought compassion to the coast by tabling at Jupiter, Florida’s annual Pet-A-Palooza. This event creatively showcases live music for an audience of animal enthusiasts, and the crowd treated us like rockstars when we shared our tasty vegan recipes!
