Vegan Holiday Libations that Bring Joy to All

smcdonaldRecipes, Veg Eating Leave a Comment

Like all recipes, holiday-themed libations are taken very seriously in my household. Between the office parties, friendly get-togethers, and family visits of the season, there are so many (joyful) obligations to entertain from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Sure, some among us may limit their vegan holiday drinks to a shot of Amaretto or Frangelico in their morning coffee while their family opens gifts, but with just a tiny bit of effort you can prepare some amazing punch and cocktail recipes.

While virtually any combination which includes homemade or store-bought soy-, coconut-, or almond-based nog, creme de menthe, or creme de cacao (chocolate liqueur) will make do, wow your guests and loved ones this season with a few of our favorite mixes below. Also, be sure to match them up with plenty of hors d’ouvres from TryVeg.com to get in your remaining veg food outreach quota before the end of the year!

Egg-Free Egg Nog

The perfect blend of spice, rich-flavored but light spirits, and promotion of animal-friendly nog to your non-veg loved ones.

  • 4 cups soy, almond, or coconut milk, vanilla or unflavored
  • 6 ounces (half a package) silken tofu, extra firm
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ – ⅓ cup amaretto, Southern Comfort, brandy, or Frangelico
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • Soy- or rice-based whipped cream, for garnish

In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until creamy. Chill at least half an hour before serving, then enjoy!

Candy Cane Cocktail

Remember those fruit-and-mint candy canes with the extra colored stripes to help you pick them out of the candy bowl? Martha Stewart does!
Credit: Martha Stewart, Serves 1

  • 1 candy cane crushed (or a sliced strawberry if you’re watching the sugar intake), for garnish
  • 2 ounces (1 shot) strawberry vodka
  • ½ ounce clear/white creme de menthe
  • 2 ½ ounces cranberry juice
  • Ice cubes, for shaking

Place crushed candy cane on a saucer. Wet the outside rim of your martini glass with water and rotate to fully or partially coat the rim with candy. If using strawberry, straddle sliced whole or half strawberry over the rim. Next, add all liquid ingredients to a shaker, followed by the ice. Shake a minimum of 20 times and strain into your prepared glass; serve immediately.

Peppermint Bark Martini

Why meter your chocolate consumption with an advent calendar when you can sip it down in this cool cocktail instead?
Credit: COK Staff, Serves 1

  • 1 thinly sliced segment peppermint dairy-free chocolate bark, frozen at least 30 minutes, for garnish
  • 2 ounces (1 shot) vodka
  • ¾ ounce dark creme de cacao
  • ½ to ¾ ounce (to taste) clear/white creme de menthe
  • Ice cubes, for shaking

Place all liquid ingredients in a shaker, followed by the ice. Shake a minimum of 20 times and strain into your prepared glass. Garnish by laying frozen bark along the inside wall of the glass, and serve immediately. (This recipe can be easily modified by using a vegan white chocolate peppermint bark and clear creme de cacao.)
