How Free Vegan Snacks and 90 Push-Ups Changed Minds on Bruinwalk

Last Sunday on Bruinwalk, we challenged UCLA students to identify vegan athletes from a lineup. The prize? Free plant protein snacks from Gym Snack. (shoutout to them for the donation—these samples absolutely crushed). 🌱💪

Nearby, an Effective Altruism group was running a fundraiser—do one push-up, they donate 10 cents to your chosen charity. Our regional chapter leader, Zachary Krauss and teammate Jeremy combined for 90 push-ups, generating $9 for the cause.

Seventy students tried the samples. Ratings? Consistently 8-10/10. Multiple people asked if they could “keep the whole bag” because they were shocked that free food could actually be this good. That reaction tells you everything about how animal ag has conditioned people to expect plant protein to be inferior.

One student challenged the team on cost. They walked through the math—a block of tofu costs $2.50 versus premium lean meat prices. The student worried about protein-to-calorie ratios. The response? Extra firm tofu hits or exceeds the ideal 1g protein per 10 calories. Logic won.

Another student shared they’d been vegetarian but quit because their parents weren’t supportive at home. The team’s response: You’re in college now. You have agency. This is your moment to reclaim it.

What We Learned:
People relaxing on the Tongva Steps—not rushing to class—engaged at a 75% rate when approached directly. The lesson? Meet people where they are, both literally and mentally. Static tables have their place, but real transformation happens in conversation.

Big thanks to GymSnack for donating the samples that made this possible, and to Zachary for leading a team that knows how to turn curiosity into action. When you give people quality plant protein and straight facts, minds change. No guilt trips. No emotional manipulation. Just athletes, economics, protein science, and snacks that actually deliver.

This is grassroots in 2026. The future of food isn’t coming—it’s already here. We’re just making sure people know where to find it. 🔥
