Washington, DC — There are 52 weeks in a year. Why not make one of them meat-free? That’s the idea behind US VegWeek, a nationwide campaign empowering thousands of people—including federal, state, and local representatives—to pledge to choose vegetarian foods for at least seven days as a way to discover the many benefits and flavors of vegetarian eating.
Dozens of public officials are taking the 7-Day VegPledge, including US Representatives Henry Waxman(CA), Tammy Duckworth (IL), and Lacy Clay (MO); US Senator Cory Booker (NJ); Worcester City Councilor Sarai Rivera (MA); and Virginia State Delegate Patrick Hope.
“I am delighted to take the 7-Day VegPledge,” stated CongressmanWaxman. “Research shows that a plant-based diet can offer significant health benefits [and] is also good for the environment by reducing carbon emissions in our efforts to fight climate change.”
Jurisdictions from coast to coast—from Pompano Beach, FL, to Tucson, AZ, to Charlotte, NC—are also expressing their support through official US VegWeek resolutions and proclamations that encourage residents to participate.
Additionally, dozens of local and national businesses—including multiple Loving Hut and Sprinkles Cupcakes locations across the US—are offering US VegWeek specials, and everyone is invited to attend free events, including cooking demonstrations and movie screenings.
Compassion Over Killing, a national nonprofit animal protection organization, first launched VegWeek in 2009 with inspiration from Maryland Senator Jamie Raskin. He was the first lawmaker to take the 7-Day VegPledge—a pledge he’s kept to this day, declaring he is “aligning my morals with my menu.”
More than 50 million Americans are eating more plant-based foods while reducing or eliminating their consumption of meat. Former President Bill Clinton, Ellen DeGeneres, and even former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson are all touting the benefits of meat-free meals.
“Every time we sit down to eat, we can stand up for our health, the planet, and animals simply by choosing vegetarian foods,” said COK’s Campaigns Director Jaya Bhumitra. “And US VegWeek offers a fun and supportive way to get started.”
