Antibiotics in Chicken Linked to Urinary Tract Infections in Women

US women—that’s one out of nine—suffer from painful and persistent urinary
tract infections (UTI) each year, and now we may know why: It’s likely that many of them have become infected
with a newly antibiotic-resistant strain of E. coli, believed by researchers to
spread through poultry
raised with the routine use of antibiotics.
These findings so closely
correlate to the rise of UTI’s in the past decade, that the Infectious
Diseases Society of America has had to revise its recommendations on which drugs to
prescribe.

One Farmer’s Story: From Pig Farm to Pig Sanctuary

Taiwan%20pig%20sanctuary-285x189.jpgFor anyone who’s had the chance to meet a pig up close and personal, it’s hard not to notice how strikingly similar these animals are to the
beloved dogs with whom many of us share our homes. In fact, studies
have shown that pigs are actually smarter than dogs.

These highly social animals have such an amazing capacity to experience and express love, joy, and sorrow — and looking into one piglet’s woeful eyes as he was about to be slaughtered is what changed the course for Lo Hung-hsien (pictured here), a former pig farmer turned vegetarian advocate in Taiwan.

Summer is officially underway and everyone wants to be outdoors, which makes backyard barbecueing one of America’s favorite summer pasttimes. Unfortunately, barbecues can actually be dangerous when meat is on the menu. Grilling animal protein–in particular chicken breast, steak, pork, salmon, or hamburger–can produce cancer-causing compounds. These carcinogens are the result of cooking at high
temperatures, charring, and burning animal fats, the consumption of
which are all associated with stomach, colon, liver, and even skin cancers.

Avoid these risks by choosing delicious vegetarian fare instead. These hearty, healthy, and cruelty-free burgers and kabobs are sure to be crowd-pleasers at the next cookout you host or attend!

California Says Au Revoir to Foie Gras

smcdonaldUncategorized Leave a Comment

home01.jpgOn July 1, a California law banning the force-feeding of ducks and
geese for foie gras—and the sale of products from force-fed birds—goes into
effect, making the Golden State the first in the US to join the ranks of over a
dozen nations that have banned this cruel practice, including Germany, Israel,
Italy, Argentina, and the United Kingdom.

Foie gras is French for “fatty liver,” and in order to produce
this so-called “delicacy,” ducks and geese are force fed abnormally large
quantities of food, causing their livers to become diseased and swell up to ten
times the normal size inducing a condition known as “hepatic lipidosis” or
fatty liver disease.

July is National Veggie Hot Dog Month!

The National Hot Dog and Sausage
Council has declared July as National Hot Dog Month, but we prefer to celebrate with a compassionate twist, turning this food holiday into National
Veggie Hot Dog Month!

This July, while our nation
celebrates its independence, we need you to help us speak out for animals by exposing the cruelty forced
upon millions of pigs on U.S. factory farms—from mother pigs intensively confined in tiny crates where they can’t even turn around to their
piglets who endure painful mutilations without any relief

Earlier this week, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed two bills into
law that put his state on a growing list of states banning some of the cruelest
factory farming practices.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, the passage of these
bills makes Rhode Island the “ninth state to ban gestation crates for
breeding pigs, the seventh to ban veal crates for calves, and the third to ban
cattle tail docking.”
