With more and more vegan options available, it’s easier than ever to be better to birds by leaving them off our plates!
Every year, the poultry industry calls September “National Chicken Month” in hopes to boost slumping sales at the end of grilling season. Here at TryVeg we’re totally on board with a month honoring chickens, but we do things a little bit differently. Instead of glorifying cruelty to animals that is devastating to our environment and our health, we’re choosing to #SaveTheChickens by sharing deliciously chicken-free meals throughout the month!
1. Vegan Chicken Salad Sandwiches
Chicken salad sandwiches are a classic, and super easy to make fully vegan. If you can’t find a chicken alternative in your grocery store, no worries–drained and smashed chickpeas work just as well!
2. Vegan Chicken Quesadillas
Quesadillas are super simple, but delicious and filling. Try using any chicken alternative (Beyond Meat, Gardein, or even just jackfruit!) with some vegan cheese.
3. Roasted Lemon Garlic Vegan Chicken
This recipe uses Gardein’s chicken cutlets, which taste remarkably like the real thing and are perfect for anyone transitioning from meat eating. Roasted with green beans and potatoes, this makes an easy but substantial dinner.
4. Spicy Vegan Chicken and Waffles
Chicken and waffles are the perfect combination of sweet and savory. But during this national chicken month we don’t need the cruelty that comes with eating chicken for a crispy treat atop a fluffy waffle.
5. Caribbean Soul Bowl with BBQ Jackfruit
Packed with flavor, this bowl is satisfying soul food. Try jackfruit from The Jackfruit Company, or any brand of this popular ingredient. Jackfruit takes on the flavor of whatever you pair it with, so when cooked with a sauce it’s just like shredded chicken.
6. Vegan Drumsticks
This recipe utilizes cauliflower and jackfruit to make a stringy, chewy, drumstick-shaped “chicken” treat. Coat in your favorite barbecue or buffalo sauce.
7. Vegan Not-Popeye’s Chicken
If you’re craving that classic breaded and fried fast-food chicken, try this cholesterol-free version from the Edgy Veg. This recipe uses vital wheat gluten for a chewy, meaty, chicken-like texture. Once battered and fried, you won’t be able to tell the difference.
