It seems as if new bakeries catering the current cupcake frenzy are popping up everywhere. And it’s hard not to notice that a growing number of them are dishing out delicious vegan cupcakes to satisfy vegan cravings for these mini sweet treats.
As new bakeries open up in and around the nation’s capital, Compassion Over Killing springs into action by reaching out to the chefs and owners about adding vegan options. For example, in the fall of 2010, we met with Bakeshop, a popular bakery in Arlington, VA and worked closely with them to expand the menu to include egg- and dairy-free sweets. To launch the new menu, Bakeshop hosted a special Vegan Day celebration that doubled as a COK benefit. Not only was every item on the menu 100% egg- and dairy-free but every single cupcake flavor sold out. According to the owners, Vegan Day brought in twice as much business compared to an average Sunday.
“We were ecstatic about the success of our first Vegan Day event and are thrilled about the positive feedback we continue to receive about our vegan options” says Justin Stegall, owner of Bakeshop. “Working with COK to expand our menu has brought us new clientele and helped us meet a growing demand for animal-friendly foods.”
The launch of the new menu proved to be such an instant success that in addition to offering vegan options on a daily basis, Bakeshop also dedicates one Sunday every month as Vegan Day. To make matters even sweeter, 10% of sales on Vegan Day are automatically donated to help us help animals.
So if you live in the DC-area or are visiting, join us at Bakeshop on Sun., June 19 — or on the third Sunday of any month — for Vegan Day! You’ll find the bakery filled with vegans and non-vegans alike indulging in decadant animal-friendly sweets as well as other vegan specials (which have included waffles, pancakes, even enchiladas!).
