McDonald's: We Demand a Kinder Supply Chain

Hundreds of millions of chickens are raised and killed for the McDonald’s menu every year. These sensitive, intelligent birds are crowded by the thousands in filthy, ammonia-ridden sheds, deprived of the ability to engage in many of their natural behaviors. They are bred to grow so unnaturally large, so unnaturally fast that their legs often collapse under the weight of their own morbidly obese bodies. If a human baby grew that quickly, she’d be 660 pounds at just two months of age.

Although McDonald’s has touted its new “global commitment to source chickens raised with improved welfare outcomes,” it has yet to address these massive sources of suffering in birds in its supply chain. Meanwhile, dozens of McDonald’s competitors have committed to requiring basic changes from their chicken suppliers–changes that would reduce the severe crowding on factory farms and the crippling effects of rapid growth.

As McDonald’s lags behind on animal welfare, millions of American consumers are demanding plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs. Chains like White Castle, TGI Fridays, BurgerFi and Tropical Smoothie already cater to the massive, growing market of compassionate eaters by offering vegan burgers and sandwiches. McDonald’s Finland and Sweden also recently rolled out a “McVegan” burger after a successful test period–but their U.S. counterpart’s menu offers no vegan burger and abounds with cheap, cruelly produced meat. It’s time for McDonald’s U.S. to step up as a true food leader and offer a vegan burger.

I am not anti-chain restaurants, and I am not vegan for health reasons. I visit Chipotle and Starbucks so often that most of the workers at the locations near my house recognize me. If McDonalds had vegan options, I would absolutely eat there, particularly because McDonalds is often open later than other restaurants. LAURA PLUMB	Dear McDonald's, I have not eaten at your restaurant since becoming vegetarian in 2002, then vegan in 2013. I wish you had plant-based options (a side-salad, hold the cheese, hold the croutons, hold the dressing does NOT count). For people who do still eat animals, but want to reduce animal cruelty, please address the animal welfare issues in your supply chain, such as painful rapid growth, extreme crowding, and horrific living conditions. Cows, chickens, and pigs are intelligent and sensitive animals that feel pain, stress, and do not deserve the cruel treatment they face at factory farms and slaughter houses. For vegans like me who will not abide by any animal cruelty, please add plant-based options to your menu, like a vegan burger, vegan chicken sandwich, and vegan french fries. Boca has a great vegan "chicken" patty you could use to make vegan chicken sandwiches. Just Mayo, Follow Your Heart, and other brands have vegan mayonnaise you could use. Follow Your Heart also has vegan cheese slices that are really good! Adding hearty vegan options would increase your consumer base dramatically. Trust me, these birds are nothing more than $$ to the overseers; so much to the extent that they have to have these horrible conditions to play the "numbers game" for enough to survive to make it to market. If the animals were raised humanely, I propose that these companies' bottom line would actually increase. Consumers are becoming more and more knowledgeable about the sources of their food and the unacceptable treatment of farm animals. This is a trend that will continue to grow. I'm a vegetarian, so I do not eat at McDonald's or any other fast food place, for that matter. A plant based diet is the preferred diet of the medical community and it is the only sustainable diet moving forward. I love my vegetable-based diet. I get ample protein and my food is delicious. p	Where did I get the idea two or so decades ago that McDonald's subscribed to humane treatment of the animals it makes its money from (they get paid not one cent, but instead suffer a life of abuse)? No more breakfast sandwiches for me, chicken sandwiches, or chicken nuggets. In fact, no more McDonald's until I know that the animals are treated humanely. Gross growth is not humane for animal OR mankind. In the past few decades, girls' breasts have been growing very large at a younger age than before.
