Have some time? Netflix awaits. And if you’re looking to get a little education along with your binge watching, there are a ton of quality, available-for-streaming-now documentaries about plant-based eating or about animals.
To get you in an advocacy state of mind, we’ve picked a few of our favorites flicks for your next night in. Here are seven Netflix documentaries that are all about making the world a better place:
Forks Over Knives
If you need some healthy eating inspo, this flick is for you. It presents hard-hitting facts about America’s leading killers — heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes et al — and how food is the cause and the cure. Notable doc Caldwell Esselstyn and researcher T. Colin Campbell are the stars of this film, along with a few folks who turn their health around on a whole-foods, plant-based diet.
This flick, which was released in 2011, has basically achieved classic status. Writer/director/editor Marisa Miller Wolfson convinced three meat-and-dairy-eating New Yorkers to go vegan for six weeks — then followed them around with a camera. It’s eye-opening, honest, and offers a lot of insight into different decisions about food.
For anyone worried about the future of our planet, this shocking documentary blows the lid off the real culprit behind global warming: animal agriculture. Filmmakers Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn expose the truth about the major environmental orgs — and why they’re staying silent about the incredibly devastating effects of animal agriculture.
Just say no to SeaWorld. You probably will after watching Blackfish, a documentary about Tilikum, a famous wild-caugth orca who has since passed away at SeaWorld Orlando. The film delves into the many ethical issues surrounding keeping these majestic animals in captivity, and it’ll forever change the way you look at animals in entertainment.
Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
This flick documents the incredible transformation of Joe Cross: 100 pounds overweight, he regains his health (and his life) through juicing. All hail the power of fruits and veggies! His journey changes other people’s lives, too, and it’s all chronicled here.
Live and Let Live
This powerful film takes a closer look at man’s relationship to animals and delves into the reasoning behind veganism. The filmmaker interviews six different people who went vegan for various reasons, including a butcher who turned into a vegan chef; an animal farmer who started a farm sanctuary; and a professional athlete who transformed the way he eats and trains.
