Did you know that the nation’s capital was recently named “Top Vegetarian City” by Living Social?
To the average visitor, Washington D.C. may seem like a city filled to the brim with political figureheads, federal monuments, and way too many tourists milling about and snapping family photos in front of the White House. But once you get past the politics and historical landmarks, you’ll discover that the nation’s capital is a fully-loaded vegan haven pleasing the palates of compassionate diners from both inside and outside the beltway.
If fact, after conducting a nationwide poll, Living Social found that when asked to describe their eating habits, “more Capitol City diners say they don’t eat meat than in any other metropolis polled.”
Enter DC Meat-Free Week. Now in its third year, it should come as no surprise that this week-long meatless food frenzy, initially established as a healthier and more humane alternative to Meat Week, has grown by leaps and bounds. This year, each day features a unique theme or special event along with week-long specials at several restaurants, including Fusion, Soupergirl, and Yola.
Here are just some of the details for the week:
- Monday, Feb. 6: Free cooking class at Whole Foods (Foggy Bottom) followed by a Kick-Off Party at Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats
- Tuesday, Feb. 7: H Street Goes Veg (includes a COK benefit at Dangerously Delicious Pies!)
- Wednesday, Feb. 8: Food Truck Day
- Thursday, Feb. 9: DC Vegan Drinks at Meridian Pint with John Schlimm, author of The Tipsy Vegan
