No need for cows to give their lives for beef burgers any longer — a “bloody” burger made from 100% animal-free ingredients is now on a NYC restaurant menu. Created by Impossible Foods, the “world’s most anticipated burger” made its debut this week at Manhattan’s Momofuku Nishi restaurant.
The burger was developed by Silicon Valley’s Impossible Foods, one of the country’s hottest new start-ups using plants to revolutionize the world’s food system. This burger, which cost $80 million to formulate, is said to taste just like the real thing — only it’s made with 100% plant-based ingredients including water, textured wheat protein, potato protein, coconut oil, and and a revolutionary molecule called “heme,” which is reportedly what makes meat meaty.
“I was genuinely blown away when I tasted the burger….The Impossible Foods team has discovered how to re-engineer what makes beef taste like beef,” Momofuku chef David Chang said in a press release. “We’re always looking to support people who are making the best products in the best ways possible and to me, the Impossible Burger is one more example. First and foremost, we think this makes a delicious burger.”
According to an analysis done by Impossible Foods, producing the burger requires approximately “a quarter of the water used to produce the same burger from a cow, a twentieth of the land, and only an eighth of the greenhouse gas emissions.” Win win win.
Momofuku is just the beginning for the burger. It’ll roll out at restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it will also soon be available in grocery stores as well.
Beyond Meat also recently rolled out a meatless burger that “bleeds.” The Beyond Burger launched at Whole Foods in Boulder, Colorado, and sold out immediately. It’s also being featured at an in-house vegan burger bar, and will roll out to stores nationwide soon.
With products like these hitting store shelves, meat is obviously on its way into extinction.
