On August 11th, 2019 (now known as DC VegFest Day!) over 15,000 vegans and pre-vegans swarmed the District of Columbia, joining Compassion Over Killing for our annual DC VegFest. This year’s festival was a huge success thanks to your support, the help of some amazing volunteers, delicious vegan vendors, and inspiring compassionate merchants and nonprofits!

The popular Main Stage featured emcee Sean Savoy, vegan comedian, as well as other inspiring speakers like Aysha Akhtar, Brenda Sanders, Joe Yonan, Dr. Neal Barnard, and Tracye McQuirter…plus cooking demonstrations from chefs like Jessica Carter and Beverly Kumari.

This year’s festival stayed busy–from the packed Kids’ Zone to the famously long (and worth it!) Vegan Treats line. Our new venue at Nationals Park gave guests a way to get in the shade to beat the heat, or opt for the air-conditioned private VIP room featuring cooking demos, delicious snacks, and reserved loaded DC VegFest tote bags.

Over 100 vendors provided amazing vegan food, shopping, information, and even some free samples! Attendees were able to snack on vegan hot dogs from Yeah Dawg!, spring roll burritos from Papermill Foods, and dairy-free ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s. Many also left with products from Herbivore Clothing and Dr. Bronner’s, and some lucky winners received fun prizes from Compassion Over Killing, the festival’s host. Even after the festival, our exhibitor list doubles as a guide for shopping and snacking in and around the District.

An exciting new feature of the DC VegFest was the TryVeg Tasting Booth, where chefs Jessica Carter, Helanah Warren, and Travis Flowers taught attendees some of their favorite go-to recipes, providing hundreds of samples for all to try. If you’re reading this and didn’t snag a taste, don’t worry! The Tasting Booth recipes are now available on TryVeg.com.

Those who couldn’t attend were still exposed to the magic of vegan eating and living in the District through extensive press coverage. The day was covered by outlets such as the Washington Post, On Tap Magazine, WUSA9, ABC7-WJLA, and many more.

This year’s VegFest may be over, but make sure to keep up with us and plan for next year by following DC VegFest on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We’ll keep you updated with exciting news about DC VegFest 2020!
