TAKOMA PARK, Md. — March 15, 2019 — Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich signed a proclamation officially declaring March 20, 2019 “MeatOut Day,” inspired by the MeatOut campaign by national animal protection nonprofit Compassion Over Killing (COK), headquartered in Takoma Park.
On March 20, at the Takoma Park City Council meeting, Mayor Kate Stewart will also be signing a Proclamation declaring it “MeatOut Day” in Takoma Park, Md., recognizing the benefits of vegan eating for the environment, public health, and animals.
“Compassion Over Killing’s roots are in the beautiful and progressive city of Takoma Park, and it comes as no surprise that Mayor Stewart has chosen to highlight the importance of kind, healthy, and sustainable vegan eating on MeatOut Day,” said Erica Meier, Executive Director at Compassion Over Killing, and a long-time Takoma Park resident.
First started in 1985, MeatOut is celebrated on March 20 — the first day of Spring, and joined worldwide by thousands who are turning over a new leaf by exploring vegan eating.
Many participants also get involved by hosting a vegan event or by securing a MeatOut Day proclamation from their local government.
Locals can join in the celebration at Roscoe’s Neapolitan Pizzeria in Takoma Park on March 19, as the restaurant hosts a benefit day for COK featuring its new vegan menu.
COK took on the MeatOut campaign in 2018, empowering over 60 vegan events in countries around the world and prompting five government proclamations including in Washington, DC.
This year’s MeatOut is expected to be an even sweeter success, already inspiring over 80 events.
In addition to Takoma Park and Montgomery County, the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M. as well as Philadelphia, Pa. and Ithaca, N.Y. have all declared March 20 to be “MeatOut Day,” with more proclamations expected in other cities and counties.
