Who doesn’t love a sandwich?! Hoagie, sub, footlong, hero, grinder — these handheld foods have many monikers. But whatever they’re called in your part of the world, they’re undeniably delicious and convenient.
A sandwich doesn’t need to be piled high with animal products to be filling and tasty. There are plenty of cruelty-free foodstuffs that are great between two pieces of bread.
To prove it to you, here are five of our favorite sammies. These vegan sandwiches will make you swear off meat forever — if you haven’t already!
Corned Beef Reuben
Reubens are an old-school classic, and this vegan version is a tasty new take. Hell Yeah It’s Vegan’s version incorporates an incredibly meaty corned beef seitan. Topped with sauerkraut, vegan mozzarella, and veganized Russian dressing, it’s a meal that’ll satisfy any appetite — carnivore, herbivore, or otherwise.
Lobster Roll
Everyone loves a lobster roll … except the lobsters, who feel pain just like other animals do. Instead of sacrificing these underwater animals for the sake of a sandwich, try this tasty version of the popular New England treat that uses hearts of palm as the “meat.” Mixed with Old Bay, vegan mayo, and the usual accouterments, the final product tastes just like the real thing.
BLT
BLTs might be the world’s easiest sandwich selection, and they’re equally easy to veganize. The Edgy Veg’s version is dubbed the “TLC” for tomato, lettuce, and coconut, because coconut bacon is the meat of choice. It joins tomato, vegan mayo, and your fave greens to create an utterly satisfying lunchtime treat.
Jackfruit Tuna Melt
Nothing says neighborhood diner like an old fashioned tuna melt. But should we want to protect our fragile oceans — and ourintelligent fish friends — jackfruit is a happier alternative. In this recipe from Keepin’ It Kind, the fabulous, versatile fruit is paired with an array of spices — including kelp granules (for some seafood flavor) and transformed into a tuna doppelganger.
Monte Cristo
The traditional Monte Cristo consists of a turkey, ham, and cheese sandwich dipped in egg, fried, sprinkled with powdered sugar and paired with jam. This sweet-meets-savory plant-based version from Ms. Vegan is just as amazing, healthier and completely free of animal casualties = win-win-win!
