Miami, FL — On Tuesday, December 3, the South Miami City Commission passed a “Meatless Monday” resolution “in support of comprehensive efforts to protect the environment, our health, and animals and encouraging residents to participate by choosing meat-free, plant-based meals at least one day a week.”

Compassion Over Killing, a national nonprofit organization, worked with South Miami Mayor Philip K. Stoddard on this initiative, and applauds the city for acknowledging the far-reaching impacts of our food choices and the benefits of starting each week with healthier and more sustainable foods. In addition helping protect the planet and our health, as noted in the resolution “a growing number of people are reducing their meat consumption to help prevent animal cruelty.”

“The good thing about this discussion … is that people think about the consequences of their choices when it comes to what you buy, what you put on the table,” stated Mayor Stoddard during Tuesday’s commission meeting. “We’d like to join with the other cities in our nation and across the world that have already urged their citizens to think about these things.”

Compassion Over Killing volunteer Jessica Spain added that “With this move, South Miami legislators are demonstrating their leadership in sustainable food policy, environmental stewardship, and animal protection. As a Miami resident, I commend the city for adopting this Meatless Monday resolution.”

South Miami follows a growing number of governmental jurisdictions endorsing Meatless Monday, including Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

School districts and hospitals across the country are also joining the Meatless Monday movement, a campaign launched by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to empower individuals to start their week with healthier food choices.

“Every time we choose vegetarian foods, we’re helping build a kinder, cleaner, and healthier world,” offered Compassion Over Killing Campaigns Director Jaya Bhumitra.
