Münter joins Compassion Over Killing’s campaign to stop USDA’s dangerous “HIMP” program from expanding nationwide
October 25, 2016 — Leilani Münter, professional race car driver and environmental activist, has joined a campaign by Compassion Over Killing (COK) to oppose the dangerous and inhumane high-speed slaughter of pigs under a controversial U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) pilot program known as “HIMP.”
Last fall, COK released heartbreaking investigative video filmed inside Quality Pork Processors (QPP), an exclusive Hormel supplier. QPP is one of five US pig slaughterhouses currently operating under HIMP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Based Inspection Models Project), and it was temporarily shut down by the USDA earlier this year for “humane handling violations.”
HIMP allows slaughterhouses to operate with fewer government inspectors on site while also allowing them to run slaughter lines at a faster pace. This jeopardizes the welfare of animals, workers, and consumers.
This dangerous program has been criticized by USDA whistleblowers, members of Congress, labor unions, and food safety experts. Nearly 200,000 people have signed COK’s petition to Hormel and the USDA seeking to end HIMP.
“High-speed belongs on the race track, not in slaughterhouses where it’s putting profit before animal welfare, simply to line the pockets of animal agribusiness,” says Leilani Münter. “As a vegan, I believe all animals deserve to be treated with compassion, and ultimately, I want to see a world where no animal is sent to slaughter.”
Münter joins the campaign at a crucial time, as the USDA, after 20 years of running this pilot program, is expected to soon make a long-awaited decision on whether to end or, more likely, expand HIMP nationwide.
