City of Philadelphia Proclaims March 20, 2019 “MeatOut Day” in Honor of Campaign Celebrating Vegan Eating

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — March 15, 2019 — Mayor James Kenney has issued a proclamation declaring March 20, 2019 “MeatOut Day” in Philadelphia, Pa., recognizing the benefits of vegan eating for the environment, public health, and animals.

The city’s proclamation inspired by the MeatOut campaign by national animal protection nonprofit Compassion Over Killing (COK), after a request from the organization’s Carissa Marks, who grew up near Philadelphia.

First started in 1985, MeatOut is celebrated on March 20 — the first day of Spring, and joined worldwide by thousands who are turning over a new leaf by exploring vegan eating.

“MeatOut inspires thousands to spring into action by pledging vegan, hosting an event to help others in their community choose healthy and sustainable vegan foods, and by engaging their local governments to honor MeatOut Day,” said Carissa Marks, Outreach Manager, Compassion Over Killing.

COK took on the MeatOut campaign in 2018, empowering over 60 vegan events in countries around the world and prompting five government proclamations including in Washington, DC.

Locals can join the celebration on March 20 at V Marks the Shop, Avenue Cup Cafe, and Soy Cafe. The three Philadelphia eateries have partnered to donate a portion of the day’s sales to benefit COK.

This year’s MeatOut is expected to be an even sweeter success, already inspiring over 80 events.

In addition to Philadelphia, Montgomery County, Md. as well as the cities of Ithaca, N.Y., Takoma Park, Md. and Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M. have all declared March 20 to be “MeatOut Day,” with more proclamations expected in other cities and counties.
