The Petition

I support the City of Pico Rivera’s efforts to purchase Manning Beef and transform the property into something that better serves the community. Never again should this property be used for slaughtering animals.

For decades, the Manning Beef facility in Pico Rivera symbolized the cruelty and secrecy of industrial animal agriculture in Los Angeles. Following years of investigations, advocacy, and public concern, the facility is now in bankruptcy proceedings and scheduled for a Sheriff’s auction on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. This auction represents a rare opportunity not just to transfer ownership, but to fundamentally change the legacy and impact of this property on the surrounding community.

The City of Pico Rivera has expressed its desire to purchase the property with a clear commitment that it never resumes slaughter operations. Instead, city leaders are exploring community-serving uses such as:

  • Affordable housing
  • A community park or green space
  • A sustainable, future-facing business (including plant-based enterprises) that provides jobs

This vision would not only improve quality of life for residents, but would also mean the end of cow-slaughter operations anywhere in Los Angeles, aligning with growing public concern for animal welfare, environmental responsibility, and community health.

By signing this petition, I voice my strong support for:

  • The City of Pico Rivera’s bid to purchase the Manning Beef property; and
  • A permanent end to cow slaughter at this site and throughout Los Angeles.
