A hen’s swollen foot causes devastating pain, and she is missing toes. A hen has no relief from a painful-looking, scaly skin condition. A hen lies uncomfortable with a gaping, infected wound on her back. This close-up of a hen’s face shows the result of “debeaking,” a standard practice that consists of searing off a substantial portion of a bird’s sensitive beak, and which causes chronic pain. An injured hen struggles for air as she lies in pain. A hen is trapped in the automatic nesting equipment, and struggles to free herself. A hen suffers when her head becomes entangled in the nesting equipment. Blood is visible dripping down the side of the “nest.” Another hen becomes trapped by the dilapidated nesting equipment. Hens are rapidly pulled off of a conveyor belt, shackled upside down by their feet, and forcibly inseminated with a plastic tube. A group of hens stand around in crowded barns. These breeding hens have no reprieve from the crowded, filthy conditions of this facility.
